reFOCUS: Recovering Former Cultists' Support Network

What is  reFOCUS?

reFOCUS is a network of referral and support for former embers of closed, high demand groups, relationships or cults.

reFOCUS is not an organization, per se (it has no membership). It is, rather, a network, a nexus of connections between people in recovery, the lines of communication which link people up with available resources necessary to their recovery. Those resources include other former members, support groups and rehab facilities, mental health professionals, clergy, and other supportive organizations.

This network also serves as a means to encourage the creation and exchange of related information which educates, encourages, or informs, such as books, articles, journals, newsletters, video and audio materials, surveys and research data, etc.

What does reFOCUS do?

The board of directors of reFOCUS serves to facilitate exchanges within the network, and to identify and evaluate any additional resources which may be available.

In the recent past the board's primary focus has been given to establishing reFOCUS' identity, purpose, and goals; writing by-laws; filing for incorporation; considering security measures; securing tax exempt status, drawing up support group guidelines; and reconsidering our relationships with other supportive organizations.

Current and near future focus will be given to assisting local support groups; identify currently existing ones, and to encourage the establishment of new ones; and promoting and supporting Wellspring and other recovery resources.

reFOCUS has received internal revenue tax exemption -- all contributions to reFOCUS are tax deductible.

Our newsletter has recently been changed to a free internet email newsletter. It consists of some time-tested articles on recovery issues as well as some newer ones and news updates on recovery workshops and conferences. We welcome contributions in terms of  articles and ideas.

Other ongoing projects include maintaining the former member contact list, creating a referral list of experienced mental health professionals sensitive to the struggles of former members, and exploring possible pertinent uses of the internet and on-line computer services.
